Prepping your skin for better weather

There are many things to love about winter, but one of the things that we don’t like so much is the drying effect that it can have on our skin! What with bitingly cold weather, harsh winds and of course intense central heating, our skin can end up looking and feeling a bit chapped and distressed. And that simply won’t do with spring around the corner, so it’s time to put in some serious effort to enjoy spring-ready skin!

Don’t think that you have to hit the spa and the salon though (unless you want to of course!) – even when you’re trying not to indulge and want to save money, you can still easily pamper your skin from the comfort of your own home. Here are some easy to follow tips that are going to result in gorgeously glowing skin in time for the better weather.

Exfoliate but gently

Skin can feel a little bit raw in winter with patches of scaly dry skin unfortunately a pretty common problem. You obviously want to get rid of these, but in the gentlest way possible, so choose a fine exfoliating scrub that will buff away the dead skin without feeling like you’ve been attacked by some sand-paper. If you suffer from really sensitive skin, then stick to a wet flannel or a baby sponge to get rid of those patches.

Pamper sensitive skin

Winter can really do a number on your skin and make it feel like it has been buffered and sucked of all its moisture, so nourish it with some quality face cream. Look for products made from natural ingredients and featuring things like Vitamin E to really help to plump your skin out again and to counteract the harsh weather.

Drink plenty of water

Moisture should come from within too, and since drinking more water is pretty much always a good thing for your health, it’s time to make this habit stick. Aim for 1.5-2litres of liquid a day, of which ideally 1litre should be good old H2O. If you really struggle to gulp enough down, then get a marked water bottle that’ll let you hit your hydration goals. Another water-based tip that we have, is to place a bowl of water near a radiator when at home to prevent the heating making the air too dry – this is particularly handy in the bedroom.

Bring out the sun cream

And lighter and brighter days mean of course more sunshine, so it is time to start sloshing on the sun cream! Ideally you should wear sun cream year round, but if not, look out for moisturisers with SPF15 or above and start including them in your beauty regime. See it as an investment for the future and to protect your skin against the aging effects of the sun.

Chat to Your Doctor

If you ever have any concerns about your skin it’s always worth having a quick chat with your doctor. They don’t bite. And that goes for any medical issues you may have from a bad cold and early cancer concerns. The LOC offer lots of health advice on their website.

So get scrubbing and moisturising now and you’ll be reaping the benefits when spring does finally arrive!
